What is a Name Change
Changing a name to a Major, Emphasis, Minor, or Certificate is in essence disestablishing the existing program and establishing a new one. Students should be notified of the option to remain in the existing program or to change to the newly named program. The retiring program remains in an "Active" status but has a "Last Admit Term" to close off any new incoming students in UAccess for at least 8 years before it is officially inactivated.
Submitting a Request for a Name Change
With no Curricular Changes
Submit the Request to Rename Academic Program form to Curricular Affairs, addressed to Vice Provost and Curricular Affairs, with justification for the name change and explanation of impact to current students. Existing emphases/subplans should also be included in the memo, as well as the complete list of programs affected. Example: Changing the name of the graduate program might also include the undergraduate program and minors by the same name. The memo must be signed by the Department Head and Academic Dean. Rebranding should not take place until the name change is approved by faculty governance and the change reported to our accrediting bodies.
With Curricular Changes

Disestablish the Existing Plan
A Last Admit Term will be placed on the existing Plan or Subplan to prevent any new admissions to the existing program. Matriculated or returning students have the option to remain in the existing program or move to the newly named program. Disestablishing A Plan
New Name - New Plan
A new Plan will be created for the new name in UAccess, creating a new Plan Code. Students have a choice to remain in the existing program or move to the newly named program. Check with Curricular Affairs to get a list of all Plans in UAccess with the existing name, including emphases/subplans.
This does not require a proposal submitted through the Academic Plan Workflow.
